A reminder to wear your seatbelt

After a scary vehicle accident involving local teens Huron O-P-P are reminding you that it only takes five seconds to buckle up.

Police say a carload of teens was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Mill Road in Bluewater late Tuesday night when a 15 year-old girl who wasn't wearing her seat-belt was thrown from the car.

Investigators say the 15 year-old girl is lucky to be alive.

Huron OPP Detachment Commander Dan Grant says regardless of where you are traveling, or who you are traveling with this type of accident is an example of what can happen if you decide not to buckle-up.

Last year, 117 people were killed on roads patrolled by the OPP as a result of not being buckled up, a 14.7 per cent increase over 2006.

In Huron County, 4 of the 12 people who died in collisions, died as a result of not wearing a seatbelt

Grant says the incident is timely, as it comes during their spring seat-belt campaign.

He says as of Tuesday their campaign has contributed to a total of 121 seat-belt charges while stopping over eight thousand vehicles.

Investigators say the collision was the result of driver inexperience and alcohol use.

The 16 year-old driver faces an alcohol-related charge, and a count of Driving while a Passenger Under 16 Failed to Wear a Seat-Belt.
